What is Calmbirth?

Calmbirth® is a childbirth education program that was developed by an Australian midwife to assist couples to truly understand birth, release  fears and anxiety about birth and teach skills to help prepare for positive birth experiences. Calmbirth® draws upon evidence based research and the knowledge of experts in the field to deliver a high quality program that effectively meets the needs of couples birthing in Australia in Public Hospitals, Private Hospitals, Birthing Centres or Home. Calmbirth® is suitable if you are birthing for the first time or for subsequent births.

What will you learn during Calmbirth®?

During the class couples learn the following:

  1. The physiology of birth and how a woman's body is designed to function in labour.
  2. How to eliminate fear, anxiety and tension that can inhibit labour and birth. We examine beliefs about birth and how these beliefs can impact positively or negatively on our birth experience. With this couples learn about the powerful Mind-Body connection in relation to labour and birth and how to tap into our inner resources.
  3. The practical skills of relaxation, breathing and visualization which have been proven as instrumental in assisting the process of birth. You will learn simple, effective breathing techniques to help you relax during labour and work with your body.
  4. The important role of the father/partner during pregnancy and birth. How the birthing couple can work so well together as a team, active birthing positions and a toolbox of practical skills for birthing partners to help keep mums calm, confident and relaxed throughout their journey.
  5. Building on the strong connection you have with your baby and as a family throughout pregnancy and beyond.
  6. To feel confident and to take control of your own birth experience including preparation for all possibilities so you feel positive about your birthing journey.
  7. Communicating with your care providers and working with your birthing team to achieve the best outcomes for mother and baby.

Throughout the class, a relaxed environment is created where you will learn techniques that will assist you during birth. During the classes couples are guided through relaxation/meditation exercises that teach them how to tap into a wonderful inner resource called the Relaxation Response. The Relaxation Response is a persons innate ability to evoke a bodily calm allowing them to counteract the harmful effects of stress thus providing an atmosphere for emotional and physical healing. The Relaxation Response is a powerful tool not only for birth but also for life.
