I was 39 weeks and began having irregular contractions during the night which would fizzle out by morning but one night I woke up at 12.30am with more regular early labour contractions. These lasted for around 40 seconds and came every 5-7 mins. They still weren’t consistent enough and wanting to stay at home for as long as possible, I tried to keep relaxed and calm with warm baths and bounced on the ball for most of the day until they got more regular and powerful then we headed to the hospital that afternoon about 3pm. We met with our OB a few hours later and she checked to see how dilated I was and I was 7cm! At this point she broke my waters and said there was meconium in my waters. I was taken to the birthing suite where we laboured naturally for 4 more hours.
One thing that really helped me during my contractions was imagining that I was floating out on a moon lit ocean then a wave would come and I would lay flat on the water and breathe until the wave slowly faded away and the ocean was calm again. It’s amazing how much the visualisation helped!
Baby’s heartbeat was very erratic during contractions and the midwives were also monitoring closely as Bub was in posterior position. At one point I really felt like I needed to push so we went to the shower and tried pushing but I hadn’t progressed past 7cm and the best option to deliver safely was by emergency C-section. We weren’t scared for one bit, if anything relieved the contractions were shortly going to ease and that our baby was going to be here soon. Up until this point I had no pain relief so I’m really proud of that.
The C-section procedure was super fast and 40 mins later our perfect little man was earth side! They later told us the cord was wrapped around his neck so with the posterior position and the meconium in my waters he was a very distressed little boy. He was immediately placed on my chest for skin to skin and his first feed which he crawled and latched wonderfully.
Josh did unbelievably well and was there by my side the whole time. When the contractions got really strong he helped keep my breathing on track and I think that’s what got me through. He looked after my essential oils and my labour playlist, massaged me, helped me through the pushing stage and held my hand during C-section. Everything he learnt at Calmbirth was so valuable for our birth.
I don’t know how I would’ve handled our birth if I didn’t have the Calmbirth relaxation techniques. I’m naturally an anxious person but we both went in as a team and were strangely excited to birth! Although we didn’t have the birth we had planned, we still had the most wonderful, oxytocin-filled experience and will always be one of the most magical moments of our life! ❤️
